Queen of the Night

There is a not so attractive cactus vine that covers a good portion of the coconut tree that grows next to our pool. I remember the first time that I noticed the expired blooms hanging off of it and asking what it was. At that time, my boyfriend had been living in the home (that we now share) for about 7 years. He was not YET a plant lover and hadn’t paid any attention to the vine.

Fast forward a year or two. I’ve moved in and we get home one night around 9pm. I happen to look out back through the sliding, glass doors and on the vine, there are blooms, almost as big as our heads! We couldn’t believe what we were seeing. The flowers were absolutely stunning and there was a gentle breeze that night that made the petals flutter.

By morning, those blooms were closed up and finished but that night, more opened up. For three or four consecutive nights, we waited for and then watched the magic.

It has become something that we look forward to every year in June. Some years, (like this one) we go to bed and forget, and it is so disappointing! Luckily, we have more than one chance to try and catch the show.
