Moonlight Chronicles
This morning, a friend of mine sent me a link to these handsewn barefoot shoes that are made in Cape Town. They remind me of a kit that I bought from Simple Shoes in the 90’s that came with all of the materials needed to make your own pair of moccasin style shoes. I’ve looked online and these kits are all over the internet now, probably something to do with the barefoot shoe craze (click here and here for a couple of my favorite barefoot brands)
Thinking about those shoes then reminded me of the zine, Moonlight Chronicles, written by Dan Price. Dan is an artist and former photographer who collaborated with Simple Shoes to create 77 issues of illustrated journals that documented his life. Back then, these mini magazines felt like an underground artist’s club. I loved the line drawings and stories that filled the pages. Dan wrote about his life living in Oregon in a teepee and then later, in an 80 square foot, underground hobbit house. (password= pictures) His collaboration with Simple Shoes created a cult following. I really appreciate the uniqueness of his way of life and how devoted he seems to be towards what feels right in his soul. Thank you Dan, for sharing your story and your art with the world.
